![]() ![]() ![]() What an opportunity.”īut I had the strangest thing happen. Sarah Siskind: Well a couple months before I had this co-write with Jill and Gary, I was on a writing retreat with another writer and I got a phone call from my publisher saying “We need a duet for Tim McGraw and Faith Hill.” And I ran into the room and I told my co-writer, “I want to work on this idea, because I just got this call, and this is something that could be so big. JA: I was going to tell you my mom has always loved that song so much, and she has always said, “Jill, you need to record the song.” So just couple of weeks ago, I did the video series “Parthenon Sessions” – I played in front of the Athena statue in the Parthenon in Centennial Park with a string quartet, and I played “Sanctuary,” My version of it will be out there, and I’m really excited about that.īH: What do you remember about writing the song that day, Sarah? JA: I didn't, but Sarah and I were both working for the same publisher, and they used a ton of Sarah’s songs on “Nashville.” She'll tell you the exact amount, but I feel like it was like 12 of her songs, and I think they used seven of my songs. T Bone Burnett (music producer and Khouri’s husband) is an old friend of mine and I was visiting with them and she said, “Hey, we're going to have ‘Sanctuary’ in the show.”īH: Well, I was going to ask you how it got in there. I remember seeing (“Nashville” creator) Callie Khouri. I loved it from the beginning, and it was a big surprise. Gary Nicholson: Yeah, it just kind of appeared. I don't know if you would agree with this, Gary, but it kind of feels like that song wrote itself in a way. Jill Andrews: We were just talking about our lives, and I think Sarah was talking about something in her personal life, and the theme kind of came up. Can you tell I've been crying? This song appears in the seminal scene for the entire series (of) “Nashville.” You three write together often? What was the story of this song? Because I think it kind of surprised you when it came out. In a discussion with Bart Herbison, Executive Director of Nashville Songwriters Association International, the song's writers discuss how "Sanctuary" took shape, along with Bluebird Cafe President and General Manager Erika Wollam Nichols.īart Herbison: I watched the video this morning and I sat here and boohooed. "Let me be your sanctuary/ Let me be your safe place to fall/ I can take away your worries/ The refuge from it all." The show's most powerful musical moment came five seasons in with "Sanctuary," performed during a scene set at a memorial service for a major character. It's hard to believe that 10 years ago next month, a film crew squeezed into Nashville's Bluebird Cafe to make the very first episode of a TV show called "Nashville." Through six seasons, the music-fueled drama helped define the modern Music City, with a surprising eye for detail and reverence for the art of songwriting.
